Dads, Don’t Be So “Right” That You’re Dead Wrong!
Reflections
First, this is not a guilt trip piece! I’m a Christian, a dad, a grandfather (“Pap”) and married to a beautiful wife — and my point is this: I understand failure.
And yet, second, I am sharing these very, very brief thoughts about something that I care deeply about as a Christian father.
As fathers we need to…
Create standards,
And uphold the standards we keep.
Of this there remains no doubt.
We are to promote and maintain a commitment to truth and holiness in our homes: again, of these things there exists no doubt.
However…
These standards — these “rules keeping standards” if you please — must be prayerfully kept within the context of:
Loving with all we are,
While listening with heart,
Encouraging with consistency,
Correcting in balance,
And affirming all along the way.
We must strive not to…
Demand without explanation,
Create expectations without careful thought,
Reinforce standards without grace,
Move through the process without prayer,
And lay aside the art of encouraging and affirming more while practice it less and less.
In other words, we must not be so intent on being “right” and reinforcing what is “right” at every turn in the road that we fail to exhibit to our children the same grace that brought us to Jesus: that loving, patient, consistent, mercy-filled grace!
The road of which I speak is not easy. It is certainly not simple. And it most often is not without heartache: true.
But by the grace of Jesus, Christian dad, I believe we must pursue with everything we are this balanced, standard-keeping lifestyle if we are to be successful in our walk as fathers of faith.
And you don’t have to look far around you to see why.
